Journalism Association of Community Colleges

In honor of my Talon Marks press pass retiring, a couple of pictures from one of the last times we were all together.

7 April 2011: Boarding the bus.

Eight hours on a bus goes by pretty quick when you're engaged in a hot and heavy game of catagories or the movie game. I must admit, it got pretty ugly.

Get to Sacramento. Sign in. Go to orientations. Go to Alicia's room. Unpack. Unwind.

8 April 2011: The day of no sleep.

Wake up at the crack of dawn. More orientations and maybe a workshop or two. Go to Sacramento State. Run to do team feature competition, run to complete feature photo competition, run to do sports competition. Come back to the hotel and have just enough time to eat a pack of star wars gummies before running back downstairs to enter my photos for the competition. Miss Talon Marks dinner. Sulk. Return to Alicia's to loiter. Begin to see everyone for more than a passing glance. Happy again. Order food and start to work on team feature until 5 in the morning. Resist urge to rip off Joey's head after the sixth hour of work. Nap for an hour. Shower. Run downstairs again to turn in our submission at 8 in the morning. DRAINED.

This is Miss Maryam Nourzad. See her story soon on www.lightmeetsnight.com

9 April 2011: Awards Day

Still no sleep.

10 April 2011: The ride home.

These next two pictures are of a game we played involving goggles. Ask me when you see me and you can play :)

Bacon sundaes.

Don't let me catch you slippin. No one is safe.

The Movie Game..
Greg: "Saw"
Joey, thinking..
Joey: "Huckleberry Finn"
--everyone looks confused. Gonzo is appalled--
Gonzo: "Is anybody going to call that?"

Six Week Challenge

Sunday:
"What?"

"Low-carb diet for a week for the sake of science?"

"Sure, why not? How hard can that be?"

Wednesday:
"What the f#*$?"

Three days into my fad diet and I've figured out why diets don't work for most people. It's not about discipline or self control, it's about lack of preparation. Let me give you a quick run through of the week.

Monday: Wake up. Nothing in the fridge but leftovers from an Easter family party so I skip the rice and head straight for the beefsteak and ham. Feeling pretty gross. Kuya's birthday is that night, so I skip food until dinner time, around seven. Not by choice, but because I was busy with projects all day. In the meantime, I'm starrrving. At Sushi Dan I have three sake bombs (forgot about the carbs in beer -_-) some sliced albacore with fried onion, and baked langostino. Feeling pretty confident at this point.

Tuesday: Nothing in the fridge again. Easter leftovers are so unappetizing I only have a small portion. Editing photos, writing stories, doing research and before you know it, it's time to go to work. Pick up a grande iced vanilla latte. There's a chocolate on chocolate Good Luck cake for one of the managers who was leaving. I guess you can say refusing a slice was a piece of cake (I should go on a pun diet). So exhausted when I get home, I wash up and knock out. Went to bed hungry.

Wednesday: Wake up. Craving ALL KINDS of foods. Fridge is empty again. Ate some beefsteak and cucumbers. Pick up some Naked Juice (which probably isn't All that great for you) and drink half of that on the way to school. Walk into the newsroom to a box of mini scones and licorice. Martin proceeds to chomp down a granola bar with peanut butter. I look on with envy (it didn't even look that appetizing). Get home. At this point I'm pretty desperate to get some calories in my stomach so I settle for a fettuccine alfredo Lean Cuisine. It's okay, because that's lean, right? Yeah, nice try Laura.

So there you have it, after three days I've miserably failed the low carb bullshit. If I had been better prepared, I would have probably not scarfed down that alfredo, but to be fair, I just moved into a new place and we don't have a full sized fridge. This is basically what I have to work with for now:

Just big enough for a loaf of bread. Too bad I can't have any.
Four more days.

coachella recap

For the past week I've been trying to conjure up the perfect words to sum up my Coachella rendezvous, but no finite order of letters and spaces can do my weekend justice. It was such a rewarding experience that I would recommend to everyone who loves music and who enjoy the company of people.

My favorite moments:
Three words: Arcade Fire balls.
Coming back to the bikes to find Gonzo sitting on his very own Arcade Fire ball.
Leaving a stage and stopping to wait for the crowd to spit out your friends.

Biking 5 miles to Coachella and 5 miles back to the RV site. Daily.
Finding that someone you know just happened to be standing right next to you the whole time.
Waking up in an RV and not a smoking hot tent.
Leaving Coachella every night so stoked to party and drink some more only to get back and be completely exhausted.
Seeing everyone's face melting and tripping out only to look around and realize you're surrounded by friends and everything is okay.
Attempting to dance in the midday sun when your favorite song gets played and stopping after 10 seconds cause it was just too damn hot.. then attempting it again.

Not too many pictures, I was busy having the time of my life.

'Til next year...
